| The parts of a daguerreotype. 1. Case. 2. Daguerreotype plate with image on surface. 3. Metal mat (spacer). 4. Thick glass. 5. Preserver. Parts 2, 3 & 4 are bound together and sealed to exclude atmosphere. These are then placed in the preserver and flanges at edge folded over at the bag to further hold 2, 3, and 4 together. The whole unit is then placed in case and lid closed and clasped. |
